Vienna’s Easter markets present traditional customs and beautiful handicrafts in the lead-up to the festivities. Culinary treats, musical highlights and entertainment are all part of the experience.
At the Easter Market in front of the imperial backdrop of Schönbrunn Palace, around 60 stand holders offer a mix of great food and drink as well as a huge selection of Easter decorations: beautifully painted eggs, handcrafted keepsakes, floral arrangements, wood carvings, artisanal glassware and ceramics. Children can join in the fun at the Easter Bunny Workshop where they can try their hand at making marzipan treats, prepare Easter bouquets or set off in search of eggs. There is also plenty of fun to be had for the little ones at the Children’s Museum while the adults are sure to enjoy the Jazz am Ostermarkt concerts.
Meanwhile, the Old Viennese Easter market at Freyung features around 40,000 painted Easter eggs – transforming the square into Europe’s largest egg mountain. There are plenty of decorative souvenirs to take away, from wooden toys to ceramics, flowers and wickerwork. This pretty market square in the old town is also the place to pick up Easter specialties including Osterpinze milk buns, cakes in the shape of Easter lambs, ham baked in bread, and egg liqueur. There are also Easter craft workshops, puppet theater and a rabbit enclosure for the little ones to enjoy.
The Am Hof Easter Market is another great place to hunt for decorative items and select gifts before Easter.The Kalvarienbergfest is full of Easter presents and handicrafts, while various arty workshops give visitors a chance to put their creativity to the test.
